Best African Destinations for a Luxury Honeymoon

It is a good trip. It is not the only one, and it is not right for everybody. Some couples want to see nobody at all for a week. Some want long lunches, good wine, and a bed twenty minutes from a restaurant worth booking. Some want somewhere that feels genuinely foreign within four hours of London.

Africa does all three. This guide is organised around choosing between them rather than around a map.

The time zones are kind. Cape Town sits one to two hours ahead of the United Kingdom. Mauritius and the Seychelles are three to four hours ahead.

The privacy is real. African luxury tends towards small. Eight rooms, twelve villas, a house you take entirely. Compared with a two-hundred-key resort where privacy is a policy rather than a fact, this is a different proposition.

The range is unusual. Very few continents let you go from a private island to a working vineyard to a mountain pass in one itinerary without a punishing amount of flying.

For couples whose first instinct after a wedding is to see nobody, this is the category.

Kisawa Sanctuary, Benguerra Island, Mozambique

Kisawa Sanctuary consists of twelve residences spread along several kilometres of beach in the Bazaruto Archipelago, each with its own pool, kitchen and staff. The distances between them are the point. You can spend a week without seeing another guest unless you choose to. It is also an hour’s flight from the Kruger region, which makes it the most natural beach ending to a South African safari.

Sussurro, Mozambique

Sussurro is the quieter, more barefoot alternative on the mainland coast at Nhamabue, reached by boat. Where Kisawa is expansive, Sussurro is small and deliberately unpolished, built from local materials and running at a much gentler pitch. It suits couples who find conventional luxury slightly airless.

North Island, Seychelles

Eleven villas on a private granite island, and one of the most complete forms of seclusion available anywhere. North Island’s conservation programme, restoring habitat for Seychelles white-eyes and giant tortoises, gives the stay a purpose beyond the beach.

Frégate Island, Seychelles

Private, sixteen residences, seven beaches, and a good chance of having one of them entirely to yourself. Frégate Island is the most family-capable of the private islands here, which matters if a honeymoon later becomes an anniversary.

Franschhoek and Stellenbosch sit forty-five minutes to an hour from Cape Town, and the standard of cooking and design in the valleys has quietly overtaken a great deal of Europe. For a honeymoon this is the low-effort, high-reward option, and it pairs naturally with a few nights in the city at the start.

Sterrekopje, Franschhoek

Sterrekopje is a working farm built around restoration rather than wine tourism, with a small number of rooms and a programme of its own. It suits couples who want the Winelands without the tasting-room circuit, and it is the most distinctive property in the valley.

Delaire Graff Estate, Stellenbosch

Delaire Graff Estate is located on the Helshoogte Pass between the two valleys. Its lodges have private plunge pools and a view straight down the valley. The art collection and the setting are the draw.

La Résidence, Franschhoek

La Résidence is the most theatrical of the three, with a small number of suites decorated with real conviction, set among vineyards and orchards. It divides opinion in the best way.

Harvest runs February to April, when the valleys are at their most alive. If you are marrying in a British summer, that is worth knowing. A February honeymoon here is close to perfect, and the Cape is in high summer.

The third mood, and the one most people overlook, is somewhere that feels entirely foreign, three and a half hours from London, with no meaningful time difference.

Marrakech is a city of walls. From the street you see nothing, and behind the door there is a courtyard with a fountain in it. For a honeymoon that structure is the whole appeal, because a riad is by design a private world.

Amanjena

Outside the city among olive groves, built around a central basin, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon on a clear day, stands Amanjena. Calmer than the medina and better for couples who want the city as an excursion rather than a residence.

Royal Mansour

The Royal Mansour is not a hotel with rooms but a walled medina of individual riads, each with its own courtyard, roof terrace and plunge pool, served through a network of underground passages so that staff appear only when wanted. It is the most complete expression of privacy in the city.

Mandarin Oriental Marrakech

Mandarin Oriental Marrakech offers private villas in olive groves with Atlas views. It is located a short drive from the medina, and works well for couples who want space and a garden.

A safari is early mornings, shared mealtimes at many camps, and a great deal of time in a vehicle with a guide. It is thrilling and it is not especially private, which is a strange thing to build ten days of a honeymoon around. Three or four nights, either side of somewhere quiet, is the better shape.

If you do include one, two adjustments are worth making. Take a private vehicle, so the drives run to your pace rather than a group’s. And consider an exclusive-use property such as Singita Castleton in the Sabi Sand, where the whole house, guide and vehicle are yours, which solves the privacy problem entirely.

A short version, if you are deciding now.

• Choose an island if what you want most is to see nobody, and you do not mind that dinner is the same twelve people every night in the same place.
• Choose the Winelands if you want to eat well, move around, and have something to do on the fourth day.
• Choose Morocco if you have limited time, want somewhere that feels a very long way from home, and would rather not spend two days of a short honeymoon in the air.
• Combine two if you have fourteen days. Cape Town and the Winelands into a safari, or a safari into Mozambique, are the two that work best. Three destinations in fourteen days is one too many.

Honeymoons are the one trip where the details are least forgivable, and where the benefits of a preferred partner booking are most visible. Room upgrades subject to availability, a hotel credit, and VIP recognition on arrival all land differently on a honeymoon than on a business trip.
