A calm corner of Fifth Avenue

The Crown Building has stood at 730 Fifth Avenue since 1921, its gilded crown one of the more recognisable rooflines on the Manhattan skyline. Aman took the upper floors and handed them to Jean-Michel Gathy, the architect behind Amanpuri, Amanyara and Amanzoe, with a brief to make a Midtown hotel feel like an Aman. The result is warm timber, stone and paper screens, a palette of soft neutrals, and a sense of quiet that is hard to find anywhere else in the city.

The location is the point. Central Park is a five minute walk north. The Museum of Modern Art is on 53rd Street. Bergdorf Goodman is across the road and the rest of the Fifth Avenue flagships are on the doorstep. For a first visit to New York it is difficult to be better placed, and for a return visit the hotel is a retreat from a city that does not slow down.

The suites

The 83 suites are among the largest in New York. The entry level Deluxe Suite starts at 67 square metres, which is bigger than most hotels’ top category, and every suite has a working fireplace, a deep soaking tub and a separate living area. Interiors follow the Aman house style: natural textures, low lighting, nothing that competes for attention.

Fifth Avenue suites look straight down the avenue. Corner Suites and the Aman Suite reach up to 259 square metres over one to three bedrooms, and a small number of suites on the upper floors have Central Park views. For families and longer stays, the one, two and three bedroom Aman Residences on the top floors come with full kitchens and private access. Aman Spa New York

The spa is the largest of its kind in Manhattan. Over three floors and 2,300 square metres (25,000 square feet) it holds an indoor swimming pool lined with daybeds and firepits, a hammam, a Russian banya, a fitness centre and a series of treatment rooms. Two private Spa Houses each have their own steam room, sauna, plunge pool and treatment area, and can be booked for a couple or a small group for a few hours or a full day.

Treatments draw on the Aman wellness programme, with grounding, purifying and nourishing journeys, and the pool level is open to hotel guests throughout the day. If a stay in New York is meant to restore rather than exhaust, this is where it happens.

Dining and the Jazz Club

Arva is the hotel’s Italian restaurant, built around cucina del raccolto, the harvest cooking of the Italian countryside, with an open kitchen and a menu that changes with the seasons. Akari is Japanese, following the washoku tradition, with a counter for omakase and a dining room for kaiseki style menus. Both open onto the Garden Terrace, which sits under a retractable glass roof with firepits and water features and serves all year.

The Lounge Bar on the 14th floor is the place for cicchetti and a drink before dinner, and the Corner Bar is quieter still. Below ground, The Jazz Club is a speakeasy style room with live music most nights, cocktails and small plates. It is open to the public, but hotel guests are given priority and our Travel Designers can reserve a table in advance.
