The Antarctic expedition season runs from November to March, with December to February the peak for wildlife and long daylight. The Arctic, including Svalbard, is best from June to September, with the strongest polar bear viewing between May and September.

Both polar regions are accessible only in their respective summers, when ice conditions allow safe expedition cruising. Timing also shapes what you see: early-season Antarctica means pristine snow and courting wildlife, while later in the season brings penguin chicks and more whales. Because cabins on the best small ships sell out far in advance, we recommend planning polar trips twelve to eighteen months ahead.

At the luxury end, a bespoke gorilla-trekking trip typically starts from around £15,000 to £25,000 per person. The top and bottom of that range depend on the length of stay and whether flights are included.
