When to Visit Botswana for the Best Wildlife Viewing?
One of the first questions our clients ask us is when to visit Botswana. The seasons really do affect Botswana. Luxury safari holidays are as magical and incredible in both the major seasons.
The Dry Season vs. The Green Season
The Dry Season is best for game viewing from May to October. As the land dries out, the remaining water sources in the Delta and along the Chobe River attract huge numbers of wildlife. Predator-prey interactions are thus frequent and highly visible.
On the other hand, the Green Season, which lasts from November to April, turns the landscape into a lush, colourful paradise with newborn animals and spectacular migratory birds. This time of year provides great photography opportunities, fewer crowds, and great value.

Expert planning is a must for a trip to Southern Africa. We answer some of the most common questions when we put together these extraordinary trips.
A fly-in safari is where you fly between remote camps in a light aircraft. Botswana is a huge country, and many of its best lodges in the Okavango Delta are not reachable by road. For this reason, flying is not just a luxury. It is often a necessity. It saves you hours of travel time and gives you breathtaking aerial views of the landscape.
To get a real feel for the country’s diversity, we usually recommend a minimum of 7 to 10 days. This timeframe will allow you to experience two or three different areas, such as the water-based activities of the Delta and the incredible land-based game drives in the Linyanti or Chobe areas, without feeling rushed.
Yes. Botswana is a phenomenal family destination for those looking to share a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. While some camps do have age restrictions, we work with hand-picked, very exclusive family lodges that have special children’s guide programs, private safari vehicles, and large family suites to ensure safety, comfort, and endless entertainment.
Botswana is known for huge elephant herds, big cats and one of the world’s best chances to see the endangered African wild dog. You can reliably see four of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo. Rhino are extremely rare following heavy poaching, with surviving animals largely moved to protected sanctuaries, so they are not a realistic safari sighting.
- Elephants – Chobe National Park holds the largest elephant population in Africa.
- Big cats – Lions and leopards across the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve.
- Wild dog – Botswana is one of the best countries in the world to see African wild dogs.
- Plus – hippo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and abundant birdlife.
- Rhino – Very rarely seen, as numbers are critically low and protected.
Each region has its own character. Chobe is famous for huge elephant herds along the river, the Okavango and Moremi for big cats and wild dogs, and the Makgadikgadi salt pans and Kalahari for desert-adapted species and the seasonal zebra migration. Pairing two or three of these areas in one trip gives the fullest picture of Botswana’s wildlife, and is how we usually structure a bespoke itinerary.
