The Indian Ocean

Bespoke luxury holidays to The Indian Ocean, tailor-made by our specialist travel advisors.

Luxury holidays in the Indian Ocean

Luxury holidays in the Indian Ocean mean very different things depending on where you go. The Maldives is about overwater villas and reef on your doorstep. Mauritius offers lagoons, golf and a mountainous interior. The Seychelles has granite islands and some of the most private hideaways in the world, while Sri Lanka and Mozambique add culture, wildlife and a sense of discovery.

We have planned Indian Ocean holidays for our clients for over two decades. We know the islands, the resorts and, just as importantly, which villa, which month and which transfer will make the trip work for you.

Why book your Indian Ocean holiday with us

The right choice in the Indian Ocean is rarely obvious from a brochure. A resort that suits a honeymoon may not suit a family with young children, and a villa that looks perfect online can face the wrong way for the sunset or sit a long walk from the beach. We know these details because we visit and book these resorts every year.

As a Virtuoso member and a Four Seasons Preferred Partner, we can often add benefits such as upgrades, breakfast, resort credit or a late check-out, depending on the hotel and dates. See all our trusted partners.

We arrange every part of the journey, from flights and lounge access to seaplane and helicopter transfers, so you step off the plane and everything is taken care of.

Where to go in the Indian Ocean

Each island group has its own character, season and style of resort. Here are the destinations we book most often, and who each one suits.

Overwater villas connected by walkways extend into turquoise lagoon waters at Reethi Rah, Maldives.

The Maldives

More than a thousand coral islands spread across the atolls of the Maldives, most with a single resort. Days revolve around the lagoon: snorkelling from your villa, diving with manta rays and dinners on the sand. It is the Indian Ocean’s classic honeymoon destination and increasingly popular with families.

Our favourites include Cheval Blanc Randheli, One&Only Reethi Rah, Four Seasons Landaa Giravaaru, Velaa Private Island, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and JOALI, with JOALI BEING for a wellness-focused stay.

Guest relaxing on a sun lounger under the palms at One&Only Le Saint Géran, Mauritius

Mauritius

Mauritius combines beach with more to do on land than most Indian Ocean islands: mountain hikes, championship golf, tea plantations and a lively food scene with Indian, French and Creole influences. There are direct flights from London, which makes it one of the easier long-haul beach holidays.

On the east coast we recommend One&Only Le Saint Géran, Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita and Le Touessrok. Elsewhere, Royal Palm Beachcomber, The Oberoi and The St. Regis Mauritius each have a loyal following.

Lush tropical foliage on North Island, Seychelles

The Seychelles

The granite islands of the Seychelles look unlike anywhere else in the region, with huge boulders, jungle-covered hills and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It suits couples and families who want nature and privacy rather than a resort scene.

For complete seclusion, North Island and Fregate Island are private islands with a handful of villas each. On Mahé, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles sits in a quiet bay with villas set into the hillside.

Elephants in Sri Lanka, near Amanwella

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka adds culture and wildlife to a beach holiday: ancient cities, tea country, leopards and elephants, then a stretch of palm-lined coast to finish. It pairs well with the Maldives, which is a short flight from Colombo.

Aman has two of our favourite hotels on the island, Amangalla inside the walls of Galle Fort and Amanwella on the beach at Tangalle, and our Aman partnership adds benefits at both.

Guest residence bedroom at Kisawa Sanctuary, Mozambique

Mozambique and Zanzibar

For something wilder, Mozambique offers the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, with dunes, dhow sailing and whales from June to October. Kisawa Sanctuary is one of the most original resorts in Africa.

Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, combines the history of Stone Town with white beaches, and is the natural place to relax after a safari in the Serengeti.

Where to stay

Indian Ocean resorts range from large, lively properties with several restaurants and a kids’ club to private islands with only a handful of villas. The choice of villa matters as much as the resort: overwater or beach, sunrise or sunset side, pool or no pool, and how far you are from the main restaurant.

Tell us who is travelling and how you like to spend your days, and we will suggest the right island, resort and villa. For honeymoons we look for privacy and a beautiful setting. For families we look for connecting villas, shallow lagoons and good children’s clubs.

Planning your Indian Ocean holiday

Direct flights from London reach Mauritius in around twelve hours and the Maldives in around ten, depending on the season. Most other routes connect through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, which also makes an easy stopover. We book the flights that suit your dates, with lounge access and fast-track where available.

In the Maldives, most resorts are reached by seaplane or speedboat from Malé. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so we plan your flights to avoid an overnight stop. For the Seychelles private islands and Mozambique, we arrange light aircraft or helicopter transfers.

When to visit the Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is a year-round destination, but each island has its own best months. The Maldives is driest from December to April. Mauritius is at its best from May to December, when it is cooler and drier. The Seychelles is warm all year, with the calmest seas in April and May and again in October and November.

Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts are best from December to April, and Mozambique from May to November. Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the busiest weeks everywhere, so book these well ahead.

Luxury Safari & Wildlife Experience Holidays

Combine the Indian Ocean with a safari

The Indian Ocean is the perfect way to finish an African safari. Popular combinations include Kenya or Tanzania with Zanzibar or the Seychelles, and South Africa with Mauritius or Mozambique. If you are planning your first safari, our guide to bespoke African safari holidays is a good place to start.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives also combine well, as do a few nights in Dubai on the way out or back. Speak to one of our advisors about the best way to put your trip together.
