British Airways’ New A380: Nearly Half the Plane Is Now Premium
British Airways has unveiled the cabins for its refurbished Airbus A380, and the numbers tell the story before the photographs do. Of 417 seats, 202 are in premium cabins: First, Club Suite or World Traveller Plus. No other airline’s A380 comes close. For our clients, who fly at the front of the aircraft as a matter of course, it is one of the most significant changes to the BA long-haul fleet in a decade, and it changes how we will book certain routes over the next two years.
The New BA A380 Cabin by the Numbers
The refurbished aircraft, announced by British Airways in October 2026, carries:
- 12 First suites, two fewer than before, in an all-new design
- 106 Club Suites, up from 97, filling the entire upper deck
- 84 World Traveller Plus seats, up from 55
- 215 World Traveller seats, down from 303
That puts 48 per cent of passengers in premium cabins. On published seat maps, Emirates (on its four-class A380) and Qantas are the nearest at around 30 per cent, Singapore Airlines at 27, and Etihad and Qatar Airways far lower at 16 and 11 per cent, largely because neither flies a premium economy cabin. The trade calls this premiumisation, airlines trading economy rows for higher-yielding seats. British Airways has leaned that way for years; this is the airline doubling down.
The World’s Largest Business Class Cabin
The headline is the upper deck: 106 Club Suites, each with a closing door, direct aisle access and a fully flat bed, in what BA describes as the largest business class cabin in the world. Club Suite is already the product that transformed BA’s reputation at the front of the plane, and the A380 is one of the last major aircraft in the fleet still flying the old yin-yang Club World seat. That ends with this refit, which fits an updated Club Suite: new finishes and storage on the same proven seat.
There is a caution, and it is one our Travel Designers will be managing on every booking. The old 777 Club World cabins earned the nickname “the dormitory” for their size, and 106 seats on one deck is bigger still. BA is splitting the upper deck into four smaller zones, which helps. Even so, the forward and rear mini-cabins will be the seats to request, and meal service across a deck that long will test the crew, particularly on the first flights. We expect the experience to settle after the first few months, as it did when Club Suite first appeared.
What Changes in First and Premium Economy
First shrinks from 14 suites to 12, trading two seats for more space per suite in an entirely new design, which is the right direction: BA’s A380 First was the fleet’s most dated. Expect it to be the hardest cabin to secure on the refurbished aircraft, both because there are fewer seats and because demand to try the new product will be intense. The 12 suites sit in three rows at the front of the lower deck, laid out one-two-one, each with sliding doors, a 79-inch bed and a 32-inch screen, and the two centre suites open up for dining together. The new First amenity kit and sleepwear are already on board from 6 October.
World Traveller Plus grows by 29 seats to 84, making it one of the largest premium economy cabins anywhere. It moves to the main deck in a two-four-two layout with 38 inches of legroom. For families flying together on a budget that does not stretch to four Club Suites, this is the quiet winner of the refit: a cabin big enough that a family of four or five can usually sit together without compromise.
When and Where the Refurbished A380 Will Fly
The first refurbished aircraft is due in service in the coming months, with the remaining eleven aircraft refitted progressively into 2028. BA has not yet published which routes get the new aircraft first, so for the next year or so the same route may be flown by old and new A380s on different days, and the difference between them is considerable.
That is where a Travel Designer makes the difference. We track the aircraft assignments as they are published, book clients onto the refurbished departures where the dates allow, and move them when BA swaps aircraft, which it will. As a British Airways Appointed First Operator, Berkeley Travel also holds and prices First and Club Suite on BA’s long-haul network with the access that comes with that status. If the A380 flies to your safari gateway or your winter-sun destination, the question from now on is not just which class but which aircraft.
BA A380 FAQs
The questions below are the ones clients have asked us since the announcement, from when the new British Airways A380 flies and what is new in First and Club Suite, to which seats to request and how to make sure you are on the refurbished aircraft.
The first refurbished A380 is due in service in the coming months, with the remaining eleven following through to 2028. Until then, old and new configurations will fly side by side, so the aircraft on your specific date matters more than the route.
106, filling the whole upper deck, making it the largest business class cabin on any aircraft. Each Club Suite has a sliding privacy door, direct aisle access and a fully flat bed.
An all-new First suite, with the cabin reduced from 14 seats to 12 to give each suite more space. It replaces what was the most dated First product in the BA fleet.
Book through someone who is watching the aircraft assignments. Routes and dates for the new A380 are being released gradually, and BA swaps aircraft on a route without notice. We book clients onto confirmed refurbished departures where possible and move them if the assignment changes.
Fly Better, Starting Now
The new A380 is the clearest sign yet of where long-haul luxury is going: more premium seats, fiercer competition for the best of them, and a widening gap between a good flight and a great one on the same route. Berkeley Travel’s Travel Designers book BA’s premium cabins daily and hold Appointed First Operator status with the airline. Contact our team and we will make sure the aircraft, not just the class, is right.
