Guide to Luxury Holidays in South Africa

The difficulty is not getting there. It is deciding what to do with the country once you have.

A luxury holiday in South Africa is really three quite different holidays. Most first-time visitors are trying to work out how to fit two or three of them into a single trip. 

There is Cape Town, which has one of the best small-hotel scenes anywhere in the world. 

There are the Winelands, forty minutes inland, where the standard of food and design has quietly overtaken a great deal of Europe. 

And there is safari, several hours north by air, in reserves that offer the most reliable big-cat viewing on the continent.

This guide is built around that decision rather than around a list of nice places to stay.

The case for South Africa is within a single country. You can spend four nights in a city hotel with a serious art collection, three in a vineyard suite, and four in a bush lodge with a private guide, and never change time zones or take a flight longer than two and a half hours.

That matters more than it sounds. Multi-country African itineraries can be beautiful on paper and punishing in practice, with light-aircraft transfers, weight restrictions and long waits at regional airports eating a day at a time. South Africa gives you variety without that tax.

The country also happens to be very good at the things our clients tend to care about. The Cape wine industry produces at a level that now travels well. Cape Town’s restaurant scene is genuinely inventive rather than derivative. And South African conservation, particularly in the private reserves bordering Kruger, is among the most sophisticated anywhere, which is why wildlife viewing is what it is.

Cape Town rewards a minimum of four nights, and five is better. Table Mountain closes in cloud without warning, so a spare day is not a luxury, it is insurance against missing the one view everybody comes for.

Beyond the mountain, the city is best taken slowly: the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum at the Waterfront, the Constantia wine valley twenty minutes from the centre, the drive around Chapman’s Peak, and Kalk Bay for a morning of nothing in particular.

Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are forty-five minutes to an hour from Cape Town, which means people often treat them as a day trip. That is a mistake. The Winelands are where a South African holiday slows down, and two or three nights there changes the shape of the whole trip.

Harvest runs from February to April, and the valleys are at their most active then. Winter brings fires, long lunches and far fewer visitors, which some clients prefer.

A note on the Franschhoek wine tram: it is popular for a reason, and it is also full. We would rather put a driver and a guide with you and build a private route around three estates chosen for what you actually drink.

Most first safaris in South Africa happen in one of two places, and the difference between them is worth understanding before you book.

The Sabi Sand is a private reserve sharing an unfenced boundary with Kruger, so the wildlife moves freely between them. Because it is private, vehicles can drive off-road to follow a sighting. This is the single reason the Sabi Sand has the leopard reputation it does. You are not watching a leopard from a road three hundred metres away, you are alongside it.

Kruger National Park itself restricts game viewing to the road network, which changes the experience considerably. The exception is the private concessions inside the park, which operate under their own rules and have the park’s scale largely to themselves.

Singita Boulders sits on the Sand River in the Sabi Sand and is the straightforward recommendation for a first safari. Singita Castleton is taken on an exclusive-use basis, which makes it the right answer for a family group or two couples who would rather not share a vehicle or a dining table with strangers.

Inside Kruger, Singita Lebombo and its smaller neighbour Singita Sweni sit on a private concession above the N’wanetsi River, with the architecture and the wine cellar that the group is known for.

Further west, the Kalahari offers a completely different kind of safari: red dunes, meerkats, black-maned lions and enormous silence. It is often the reason people come back. Speak to a travel designer if you want it built in.

This is the part most people get wrong, and it is almost always a question of sequence rather than content.

Our default is Cape Town first, Winelands second, safari last. There are three reasons. You arrive in a city with the energy for a city. The Winelands act as a decompression between the two halves. And safari means five o’clock starts, which are much easier at the end of a trip than at the beginning, when your body is still adjusting.

The reverse order works for travellers who want to finish somewhere they can sleep in, and for anyone combining the trip with business in Johannesburg.

Ten days, first trip. Four nights Cape Town, two nights the Winelands, three nights the Sabi Sand, fly home overnight from Johannesburg. This is the tightest version that does not feel rushed, and it is the itinerary we build most often.

Fourteen days, with the coast. Four nights Cape Town, three nights the Winelands, two nights in Hermanus at Birkenhead House on the cliffs above Walker Bay, then four nights on safari. The Hermanus leg only earns its place in whale season, which is roughly June to November.

On the logistics: direct flights run between Cape Town and Skukuza, the airstrip inside Kruger, though the schedule is seasonal and a connection through Johannesburg is sometimes the better routing. Where timings are awkward or a group is travelling together, a private charter removes the connection entirely and can put you into a lodge airstrip directly.

Three nights is the minimum on safari. Two nights gives you three game drives, and if the weather turns you have very little margin.

The best all-round window is late September to early November. Game viewing is at its strongest as the dry season ends and animals concentrate around water, the Cape has warmed up without reaching high summer, and the southern right whales are still in Walker Bay. If you can only travel once, travel then.

For safari, May to September. The bush thins out, water is scarce so wildlife is predictable, and the malaria risk in the Kruger region is at its lowest. Mornings are genuinely cold, which surprises people. Bring layers.

For Cape Town and the Winelands, November to March. Long, dry, warm days. The trade-off is the southeaster, the wind that arrives in summer and can blow for days, and peak-season pricing around Christmas and New Year, when the best rooms in the city are held a year ahead.

For whales in Hermanus, June to November, with September and October the peak.

For the wine harvest, February to April.

The one genuine conflict is that peak safari season and peak Cape season sit at opposite ends of the year. The shoulder months resolve it, which is why we point most first-time visitors at the spring window above.
