Planning a Medical Retreat - 10 Things You Should Do Beforehand

A medical retreat is not a holiday with a spa attached. Demand has never been higher: wellness tourism grew 13.8% last year according to the Global Wellness Institute, and the medical end of it, the doctor-led clinic stay, is growing fastest of all. The best clinics in Europe run diagnostic programmes that rival private hospitals, set in surroundings that rival the finest hotels, and what you get out of a medical wellness holiday depends almost entirely on what you do before you arrive. Treat the ten steps below as your medical spa checklist; they are the things we ask every client to consider before we confirm a booking.

1. Be Honest About Your Goal Before Choosing a Clinic

Longevity diagnostics, gut health, weight, sleep, burnout recovery or post-illness rebuilding are different programmes at different clinics. Write down the one result you want before you look at a single property. Everything else follows from it.

Be honest with your travel designer too. The more we know about the real objective, including the things that feel too small or too private to mention, the more precisely we can match the clinic, the doctor and even the season.

2. Match the Clinic to the Goal: Lanserhof, Clinique La Prairie or Villa Eden

The famous names are not interchangeable. Lanserhof is the benchmark for gut health and its modern take on the Mayr cure: Lanserhof Tegernsee is the flagship, Lanserhof Sylt adds North Sea drama and the largest premises, and Lans in Austria is the original. Clinique La Prairie in Montreux is the longevity clinic of record, built on full-body diagnostics and biological age testing. Villa Eden in Merano offers a gentler, Italian approach where medical programmes sit alongside proper la dolce vita.

Beyond those three, Chenot Palace Weggis on Lake Lucerne and SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain both belong on any luxury health retreat shortlist, and Chenot’s original Palace Merano remains a client favourite. We place clients at all of them, for very different reasons. The brochure will not tell you which is yours; your goal, your appetite for discipline and your tolerance for broth at dinner will.

3. Book Your Medical Retreat Six to Twelve Months Ahead

The best doctors and the best rooms sell out together. Lanserhof Tegernsee and Clinique La Prairie routinely fill their calendars months in advance, particularly in January and September, the two great reset seasons.

4. Commit to Enough Time for Results

Seven nights is the honest minimum for a medical programme; ten to fourteen is where the results compound. A three-night taster will relax you, but it will not change your bloodwork.

5. Complete the Paperwork and Pre-Retreat Health Check

Every serious clinic sends pre-arrival questionnaires and asks for medical records, recent blood tests and a list of medications. Some, particularly the longevity programmes, include a formal pre-retreat health check or ask your GP for one. The more complete your file, the more your consultation days achieve. Send everything at least two weeks before arrival.

6. Start Your Detox Retreat Preparation at Home

Arrive already weaned off caffeine, alcohol and sugar, ideally tapering over the fortnight before. Withdrawal headaches during the first days of a Mayr cure are the most common complaint we hear, and the most avoidable. Detox retreat preparation starts in your own kitchen, not at the clinic gates.

Light exercise in the weeks before helps too. You will get more from daily hikes, altitude and treatment schedules if you arrive with some conditioning rather than treating the clinic as the start line.

7. Expect the Food to Be Part of the Medicine

At Lanserhof you will chew each mouthful thirty times and dinner may be a cup of broth. At Clinique La Prairie the kitchen is closer to fine dining, but still built around your programme. Villa Eden sits somewhere between the two.

Know which regime you are signing up for, and if food is a source of joy rather than discipline for you, say so; it changes our recommendation.

8. Clear Your Diary Completely

A medical retreat with a laptop open is money wasted. Set the out-of-office, delegate properly and treat the week as you would surgery: unavailable means unavailable.

Most clinics quietly discourage screens, and the guests who comply get visibly more from the week. If stepping away entirely is impossible, tell us; some clinics handle a working guest better than others.

9. Pack for the Clinic, Not the Destination

Comfortable layers, swimwear, trainers for the gym and mountain walks, and something loose for treatment days. Leave the evening wardrobe at home; even at the smartest clinics, dinner in a robe is entirely normal.

10. Plan Your Re-entry Before You Leave

The fortnight after a retreat is where results are won or lost. Do not land back into client dinners on night one. Ask the clinic for a written aftercare plan, book the follow-up consultation before you leave, and let us build a gentle travel schedule around it.

Our founder and CEO is a regular at Lanserhof, and the piece of advice he gives every client is the same: book the cooking classes. They are the easiest way to pick up habits you can actually take home, small changes to how you shop, cook and eat that keep the results of the week alive long after you are back at your desk.

Medical Retreat FAQs

The questions below are the ones we answer most when clients plan a medical retreat, longevity clinic stay or medical wellness holiday in Europe, from what a week at Lanserhof Tegernsee or Clinique La Prairie costs and what a Mayr cure involves, to what a biological age test actually measures.

The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Family Safari

A family safari is one of the few holidays that genuinely changes how children see the world. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong. Book the wrong reserve and you will spend your evenings worrying about malaria tablets; book the wrong lodge and your eight-year-old will be turned away from the game drive vehicle. This guide covers how to plan a family safari around the five decisions that matter most: the best age to go, where safety and malaria shape the choice, which country fits your family, when to book, and how to recognise a truly child-friendly safari lodge.
