The Best Places in Africa for Family Holidays

Ask most travel companies about an African family holiday and you will be sent on safari. It is a wonderful thing to do with children old enough for it, and it is a fraction of what the continent offers a family.

Family Holidays in Africa Without the Jet Lag

Africa’s real advantage for families is not the wildlife. It is the clock. Cape Town is one to two hours ahead of the UK. Mauritius and the Seychelles are three to four ahead. Marrakech is on British time for much of the year. Nobody arrives to three nights of children awake at four in the morning, which is the tax that Asia, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean’s more distant islands all charge.

This guide covers the parts of Africa that work for families beyond the game reserve, arranged by what your children can actually cope with. If safari is specifically what you are researching, our guide to planning a family safari covers ages, malaria and lodge choice in full, and this piece deliberately does not repeat it.

Why Africa Works So Well for a Family Holiday

No jet lag, or very little. Covered above, and it is the single strongest argument. A ten-day holiday where three days are lost to adjustment is a seven-day holiday.

Space. African luxury runs to villas, houses and lodges rather than corridors and connecting doors. Families end up with more room here than the same budget buys in Europe.

Something to talk about. Children who would be bored by a fortnight on a lounger are usually not bored by a tortoise, a dune, a tide pool or a market. Africa is unusually good at giving a family a shared subject.

Staff who mean it. Childcare across southern Africa and the Indian Ocean is generally warm rather than transactional, and it makes a material difference to whether the adults get a holiday too.

Cape Town and the Cape: A City That Works With Children

Cape Town is the rare city that a seven-year-old enjoys as much as an adult. There is a mountain with a cable car, penguins at Boulders Beach, an aquarium at the Waterfront, tide pools along the False Bay coast and a drive around Chapman’s Peak that nobody complains about.

It is also entirely malaria-free, which removes the question that shapes so much African family planning.

One & Only Cape Town is the most family-capable hotel in the city, on the marina at the Waterfront, with the scale and the kids’ club that the smaller properties cannot offer. For most families with young children this is the straightforward answer.

Ellerman House is the alternative for families who would rather take a villa than a suite. The villas sleep a family or two couples travelling together and give you the run of the place.

Forty minutes inland, Babylonstoren is the best Winelands option with children by a distance: a Cape Dutch farm with a large formal garden the kitchen actually cooks from, animals, and space to run. Adults get the wine, children get the farm, and nobody is being tolerated.

Our guide to luxury holidays in South Africa covers how to combine the Cape with a safari leg.

The Indian Ocean: Mauritius and the Seychelles

For families who want a beach holiday that is genuinely a beach holiday, this is where Africa is at its strongest, and it is chronically overlooked in favour of the Maldives.

The advantage over the Maldives with children is simple: these are real islands. There is an interior, a road, a market, a mountain and something to do on the fifth day when the sea has lost its novelty.

Mauritius is the most family-established. One & Only Le Saint Géran sits on its own peninsula with a lagoon on one side and is among the most reliable family properties anywhere in the region. Four Seasons at Anahita works on villas rather than rooms, which suits larger families and multi-generational groups. Le Touessrok and Royal Palm Beachcomber are the other two we book most.

The Seychelles is the more dramatic landscape, with granite boulders, forest and beaches that look like a screensaver because they are one. Four Seasons Seychelles on Mahé is hillside villas above Petite Anse, and works well with children old enough to manage steps and buggies. Frégate Island is a private island with seven beaches and a giant tortoise population, which is an unusually good combination for a family that wants seclusion without boredom.

Both destinations are strong for snorkelling, and our diving itineraries cover the properties with serious marine programmes.

Morocco: The Short-Haul Introduction to Africa

Three and a half hours from London, on British time for much of the year, and utterly unlike home. For a family’s first trip to Africa, Marrakech is the low-commitment, high-impact option, and it works over a long weekend as well as a fortnight.

Children respond to Marrakech in a way they rarely do to European cities. The souks, the snake charmers and the storytellers in the Jemaa el-Fnaa, the horse-drawn caleches, a day in the Atlas foothills or the Ourika Valley, a cookery lesson. It is a city that asks something of you.

Four Seasons Marrakech is the most straightforwardly family-friendly, with gardens, two pools and a kids’ club, a short drive from the medina. Mandarin Oriental Marrakech works on private villas in olive groves with their own pools and gardens, which suits families who want space and privacy over facilities.

Avoid July and August, when Marrakech is genuinely hot. Spring and autumn are the seasons, and Christmas is excellent. Browse the full Morocco collection.

Namibia: For Families With Teenagers

This is the one to hold back until the children are older, and then it is extraordinary.

Namibia is a landscape holiday rather than a wildlife one, which is precisely why it works with teenagers who have decided that being impressed is beneath them. Climbing a three-hundred-metre dune at Sossusvlei at sunrise is a physical experience rather than a scenic one. The country is also largely malaria-free in the central and southern regions, and the driving distances make it feel like an expedition.

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge sits in a private reserve among the highest dunes in the world, with a stargazing programme that is genuinely one of the best on earth. Habitas Namibia is the more relaxed, sociable alternative.

Where Safari Fits

Briefly, because we have covered it properly elsewhere.

Safari with children is governed by two things: malaria, and the minimum age a camp sets for game drives. Both narrow the map considerably, and both are the subject of our guide to planning a family safari, which goes through the age thresholds and the malaria-free reserves in detail.

The short version is that malaria-free reserves in South Africa make an excellent first safari for younger children, that most camps set a minimum age of six or twelve for drives, and that a private vehicle stops being a luxury and becomes a necessity the moment a five-year-old needs to leave a sighting early.

For families ready for it, Giraffe Manor in Nairobi remains the single most reliable hit with children in Africa. Giraffes put their heads through the breakfast room windows. It is not a safari and it does not pretend to be, but nothing else produces the same reaction.

Combining a Beach With Everything Else

The classic African family trip is two stops: something with content, then something with a beach.

Cape Town then Mauritius is the most comfortable version, though it involves a long eastward flight in the middle.

Cape Town, a malaria-free reserve, then the Cape coast keeps everything inside one country and one time zone, which with young children is worth a great deal.

Marrakech then the Atlantic coast at Essaouira is the short-haul version, achievable in ten days.

Allow at least four nights in each place. Families with young children get very little out of a three-night stop once you subtract the arrival and departure days.

What Actually Makes a Property Family-Friendly

Websites are unreliable on this, so these are the questions we ask on your behalf.

Room configuration. Interconnecting rooms, a villa, or a suite with a separate children’s room. This is the single biggest determinant of whether the adults get an evening.

Minimum ages. For game drives, kids’ clubs, spa treatments and some restaurants.

Whether the kids’ club is real. Staffed hours, age bands and whether it runs every day or only in school holidays.

Babysitting. Whether it is in-house and vetted, how much notice is needed, and whether the sitter speaks a language your child does.

Food. Whether there is a genuine children’s menu, whether early dinners are possible, and whether the kitchen will handle allergies without drama.

Pools. Depth, supervision, and whether there is a shallow one.

We check all of it before recommending anywhere, because the difference between a property that welcomes children and one that merely permits them is not visible in the photographs.

What Booking Through Berkeley Adds

Family bookings are where a preferred partner relationship does the most work, because the things families need most are the things that are hardest to request: interconnecting rooms held together, a specific villa, an early check-in after an overnight flight with an exhausted four-year-old.

Our preferred partner status brings room upgrades subject to availability, daily breakfast, a hotel credit and VIP recognition on arrival. The full list is on our trusted partners page. Our concierge team handles the rest of it, including the ground transport with the right car seats, which is the detail most often forgotten.
