Guide to Having a Luxury Honeymoon in South Africa

This guide follows that sequence from the airport to the last morning: Cape Town, the Winelands, the coast at Hermanus, then a safari finale. Fourteen days does it comfortably. Ten days does it if you drop one stop, and the section at the end says which.

You land without jet lag. The overnight flight from London is under twelve hours and Cape Town is one to two hours ahead of British time, so the first morning of the honeymoon is a real one rather than a write-off. After a wedding weekend, that is worth more than it sounds.

The second reason is variety without effort. A honeymoon that includes a city, a vineyard, a clifftop and a game reserve would normally mean several long flights. Here it means one internal hop and some pleasant driving.

Give it four nights. Table Mountain disappears into the clouds without warning, and a spare day is insurance against missing the view everyone comes for.

For a honeymoon specifically, the choice of neighbourhood matters more than the choice of hotel. The Atlantic seaboard gives you water and sunsets and a short drive to dinner. The Gardens district gives you a city you can walk into.

Belmond Mount Nelson is the grande dame, pink since 1918, set in nine acres of gardens below the mountain and walkable into town. Choose it for a sense of occasion at the start of a marriage, and for the fact that you can have a drink under the trees without getting into a car.

Ellerman House in Bantry Bay is the more private option, small, high above the Atlantic, with one of the most significant collections of South African art in private hands. There are only a handful of rooms, which is the point.

The Silo sits above the Zeitz MOCAA in a converted grain silo at the Waterfront. Ask for a room facing Table Mountain. The harbour rooms are excellent, the mountain rooms are the ones you will talk about.

Two evenings worth planning rather than improvising: a table at one of the city’s better restaurants, which need booking weeks ahead in high season, and sunset from Signal Hill or Chapman’s Peak rather than from the hotel terrace.

Two or three nights, forty-five minutes to an hour inland. This is where the honeymoon slows down, and where most couples find they wish they had given it another night.

Sterrekopje, Franschhoek. A working farm built around restoration rather than wine tourism, with a small number of rooms and its own programme. It is the most distinctive property in the valley and suits couples who want quiet and intention rather than tastings.

La Résidence, Franschhoek. The opposite instinct and equally good: eleven suites decorated with real conviction, set among vineyards and orchards, with a level of theatre that a honeymoon can carry.

Delaire Graff Estate, on the pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, is the third option, with private plunge pools and a view straight down the valley.

Harvest runs February to April. A February honeymoon here is close to ideal, with the Cape in high summer and the valleys working.

On wine: rather than the Franschhoek wine tram, which is popular and full, we would put a driver and a private guide with you and build a route around estates chosen for what you actually drink. It is a better day and it costs you nothing in effort.

Two nights, east of the Winelands along the coast. This leg earns its place in whale season and can be dropped outside it.

Southern right whales come into Walker Bay to calve between roughly June and November, with September and October the peak. They come extremely close to shore, which is why Hermanus has the reputation it does: this is land-based whale watching from a clifftop path, not a boat trip.

Birkenhead House sits on the cliffs directly above the bay, small and unbuttoned after the formality of the city, and in season you can watch from the terrace.

If you are marrying in a British summer, this is the leg that decides your dates. A July or August honeymoon puts you in Hermanus for whales and in the bush for prime game viewing at the same time, which is the strongest argument for a winter trip.

Four nights, and last for a reason. Safari means five o’clock starts, and those are considerably easier at the end of a honeymoon than at the beginning, when you have a wedding behind you and a long flight in your legs.

Fly rather than drive. Direct flights run between Cape Town and Skukuza, the airstrip inside Kruger, though schedules are seasonal and a connection through Johannesburg is sometimes the better routing. Where the timings are awkward, a private charter removes the connection.

Singita Lebombo, on a private concession inside Kruger above the N’wanetsi River, is the architectural choice. Glass, light and an enormous sense of space, with the concession largely to itself. Its smaller neighbour Singita Sweni is quieter still.

Singita Boulders, on the Sand River in the Sabi Sand, is the choice if sightings matter more than architecture. The Sabi Sand permits off-road driving, which is why its leopard viewing is what it is.

Singita Castleton is taken as a whole house with its own guide, tracker, vehicle and chef. For a honeymoon that answers the one real drawback of safari, which is that it is a surprisingly sociable holiday.

That drawback is worth stating plainly. Many camps seat guests together at dinner and share vehicles between rooms. On a honeymoon, take a private vehicle at minimum, and ask for a table of two. Both are normal requests and neither is assumed.

Ten days. Four nights Cape Town, two nights the Winelands, three nights safari. Tight but not rushed. Do not attempt to keep all four stops in ten days.

The order. City, then vineyards, then coast, then bush. It moves from most structured to least, from latest starts to earliest, and it ends on the trip’s high point rather than its logistics.
